How to Know If Your Drain Is Clogged
Does the clog affect all the drains in the house, or is it specific to one room? If all drains are slow, then the clog may be in the main line. See our page about Sewer Line Issues for more information about clogs in the main line.

Here are some signs to tell if your clog is specific to one area of your home:

  • The bathtub, shower, or sink drains more slowly than usual
  • Water doesn’t drain during a shower and you end up standing in water
  • You notice an odor similar to rotten eggs in the bathroom near the shower

Causes of Clogged Drains
Drains clog for a variety of reasons. While food particles and grease are often the causes of clogs in kitchen sinks, it’s not always as easy to figure out why your bathroom sink or tub is clogged. Some culprits may include the following:

  • Hair
  • Jewelry
  • Soap scum
  • Damaged pipes

Hair is the most common and most likely culprit when it comes to clogged drains in the bathroom. This includes facial hair and pet hair. Wet hair clumps together, eventually blocking the pipe.

Small jewelry items such as rings or earrings can get caught in the p-trap, which is the bend in the pipe below the sink that connects the sink’s drain to the larger pipe that leads to the sewer. The p-trap is shaped in such a way that it keeps toxic sewer gas from escaping back up into the sink and into your home.

Soap scum develops from a reaction between the chemicals in soap and the minerals present in water. It builds up along the walls of the pipe, narrowing the opening and eventually clogging the drain.

Damaged pipes can also cause your sink or tub to become clogged. Pipes wear out and corrode or break over time. For more information about what to do in the case of a broken pipe, visit our page on Broken Pipes.

Our Services
Clogged drains can be more complicated than they first appear. While there are many chemical drain cleaners on the market, we do not recommend the use of chemicals to clear your drain. These chemicals can corrode or damage pipes and cause further damage.

At 24/7 Rooters, we provide professional plumbing services to clear the clogged drain for you. When you call 24/7 Rooters, you’ll receive fast, quality service and effective results. We work around your schedule to clear the drain and ease your stress.
